About 10 years ago I worked in the corporate world in the health services industry. I used be a robot, staring at a desk, being bored all day long. My specific job was the justify errors on medical bills and help calculate the ledgers of the company.

Riveting work, I know. Amongst this boredom, I tried to liven things up a bit a few times by falling over my chair once in front of the entire office of women. Despite my attempts, the job remained boring.

I did learn a lesson when I left that company, and went to work at another one. I was in the interview, and I decided to tell the person interviewing me that I wanted to make $4/hour more than my last job.

I had no reason for this, just that that’s what I want my salary to be. It was a bit nerve racking when the interviewer left the room and made me wait. She came back and explained that they were going to give it to me, but to not tell anyone.

The chart above shows exactly why I got that raise. I’d done something that projected the ideal person to fill that role, and I applied that persona to myself.

I realized right then that the way I’d conducted myself in the interview (I did really well, and felt like I was charming) was the reason I got the significantly higher salary. That’s when I learned how important personal branding is.

Before we start talking about how it can help you get a job promotion, here’s some other stellar things it can help with in life.

Now, let’s get to the real part. How to get a raise at your job from personal branding. This is an interesting topic, if it works, right?

So, let’s set some goals first. After reading this, you’ll be able to get a commanding raise at your job in under 3 months. To do that, you may need to do some changing (wardrobe, car, vocabulary, etc.) but it is possible…so listen up.

Whether you’re a guy or a girl, these principles remain the same for everyone. And to get a raise, you’ll need to perform better at your job, but personal branding can help you do that.

Consider this:

  • People buy things from people.
  • You are the media.
  • Your brand stays and goes with you.

If these things seem a little off, just stop and think about them. As we go through this guide to getting a raise, try and attach a compounded ROI from them. Pretty exciting stuff.

The thing to remember, is that your pay is directly related to how much you contribute.

Unfortunately, contributing more (working harder) doesn’t always mean you’ll get rewarded for it. Here are some scenario’s where working harder doesn’t pay off.

  1.  Boss wants to keep budgets low, so he doesn’t act like he sees your work.
  2. Boss doesn’t actually see your work.
  3. Someone else gets credit for the extra effort you’re doing.
  4. Relationship is already tarnished beyond repair.
  5. Extra work isn’t valuable or effective.

Stay away from these scenarios. If you working harder will result in one of these things, this won’t work. You’ll need to repair the situation first.

In these cases, it might be time to start thinking about another job.

On top of being effective at work, your personal brand will come into play very much over the next 90 days. You may need to start being more active on it, you may need to start writing more, and being more outgoing.

That’s just how it is. You’ve got to be charming and effective.

Let’s focus on three main areas that your personal brand will need to excel in.

  2. Online personal brand.

In Person Personal Brand

I personally recommend just doing it all at once. Part of the strategy here is to get noticed. But remember, once you start coming into work dressed better, don’t call attention to it. Just roll with it.

Your clothes are just a small (but effective) way to stand out from the crowd. If you’re working effectively, you’ll already start to see some momentum.

Let’s talk about how to actually crush projects at work and get noticed. This part of your personal branding you’ll need to use later when you’re negotiating with your boss about the raise, so make it count.

To crush projects there’s a simple way to do two things.

  1. Start crushing the projects that you’re on.
  2. Start looking for projects that matter to the bottom line.

The company’s bottom line.

Use great tools. Even if the company doesn’t, find tools to help and use them.

Start doing good homework. Read up on the outlying ideas around the project, so that no one can school you on excuses or complicated tasks.

Start doing presentations. When you complete something, present it whenever you get the chance to. Don’t brag, just execute.

Start doing it. Be nice, follow all of the good charming and likeable people rules. But just start interacting more with people around you.

Online Personal Brand & Getting A Raise

First things first. If you’re not posting consistently on your social media, you’re missing out. Start posting consistently, every few days. And always follow these rules.

  • Post high quality photos.
  • Don’t post political opinions.
  • Don’t post emotional posts.
  • Don’t post partying posts.
  • Don’t post cliche posts.

Make sure you’re following a good guide to social media posting. I recommend using Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

This is critical, because your boss, the people around you and everyone in between will see what you’re posting. So make sure it’s in line with your personal brand, and you moving up in the world.

You know how tough it’s been to get a raise so far right? Impossible? Well, then count on every little detail to make that difference.

Anyone that sees your profile and somehow has any connection to the person that decides to make that decision could plant something on the path to shoot your raise down.

Don’t give anyone the opportunity to knowingly make you get denied.

It’s a strategy I employ, or live by. And one that that secure you getting the raise. Do this…

Everyhour through the day at work, train yourself to notice more things, and act on them. You’ll start to see the opportunities and capitalize on them.

Doing this could mean, helping someone strategically with a project…or letting someone else take credit for something. Either way, you’ll need to be tuned into the signals pretty heavily.

It’s not magic, just common sense and a on purpose mindset of paying attention to it each hour.

You have to learn to be very perceptive to understand what’s going on with all of the factors around you. The projects, your team, the decision makers, everyone.

If you start to understand how they think, and be proactive about doing a great job, having integrity, and showing results clearly…they’re going to notice.

That’s what Perceptive & Proactive is all about.

Once you’ve got a clear track record of all of these things in place, one of two things is going to happen.

  1. People will start talking and the boss will eventually ask you what’s going on.
  2. The boss will offer you a promotion.

In the latter case, it’s more easy. You can just negotiate for as much of a promotion as you can, and keep doing great work.

The first options is a bit more tough, since you may have to actually ask for a raise.

Here’s how to ask for a raise and get it 95% of the time.

When you ask your boss for the raise, you’ll need to understand his likes and dislikes and follow these.

  • Make sure he’s the decision maker.
  • Make sure you deserve it.
  • Make sure you know how much to ask for.

He sees something in you similar to him and wants to do good.

Hopefully by now you can see how important your personal brand is. It extends far past your social media profile. You can do tons more for your personal brand, and there are some advanced strategies to getting another raise I’ll write about in the future.

Some of those things include, blogging on the company website, helping create and spread innovation and marketing through the company, and understanding how to manage your time like a rock star.

This isn’t the right form of self promotion.

There’s a key difference between self-promotion and self esteem issues, and that is this…

You can promote yourself and it be well received, even helpful when it’s done right.

4. Make it a mix of promotion and personality.

A word on value.
Think of your Mom, your co-worker and your friend and ask yourself, “Would these three people find this valuable?”

Let’s face it, even if you work at a boring job, the people around you (including your boss) has probably seen your social profiles.

What do they think when they them? Hopefully they see “professionalism” and “well rounded”. This is probably the largest focus of your digital footprint surrounding your career and your social life.

Facebook Guide
Don’t post photos of you drinking! Not if you ever want to get recognized for something serious, or a job promotion, or something similar. Hold the drink behind you when the photo is taken.

Don’t post more than a few photos at a time. When you post 38 photos of the same scene, it’s like sneezing on someone, it’s just not cool.

Make sure all the photos you post are high quality. This requires a bit more ground work, but it’s worth it. People need to see the best version of you. No one hires fuzzy picture people.

Fill out some great information in the “About” section. Sit down and write it like a resume. Even though LinkedIn is the social network for work, you’re probably getting searched on Facebook by your employer as well.

Be open and share. Don’t act like if someone knows who you are and what you do that it’s a bad thing. Unless you’re doing something wrong, openness is a very attractive quality for companies.

Profile photo needs to be amazing! This you should make it amazing, get it done professionally, (Yes even on facebook) and don’t change it around a bunch. Your visual representation is branding as well, so keep it consistent. I leave my profile photos the for a few years, and have them across all my profiles.

Don’t get emotional. I lost so much respect for some people I was connected to on Facebook after the abolition of the rebel flag from the GA flag. Unfollowed them quickly. (Some actually told me to unfollow them if I didn’t like their post), which leads me to my next point…

Give clear instructions. Do be vague, people need to understand what the post is about, whether personal or business. Include dates, locations, etc.

Dont’ tag people without their permission unless you have an agreement in place.

LinkedIn Guide

Use LinkedIn. Add everything you possibly can to your profile. Treat it like you’re trying to get your dream job. This will serve you very well down the road.

Start writing. Yes I know, you can’t write, right? Yes you can. You’re an expert about something, and writing those things down is extremely valuable. If you don’t have a personal blog, publish the piece on LinkedIn. It’s easy.

Be consistent with your profile information. A good LinkedIn profile is probably never finished. You should spend hours on it, and then hours more each month. Every month you should be completing interesting projects or milestones at your job, add those to your profile monthly.

You’ll see that doing this over a period of time will help you when you go to change jobs, open a business or otherwise because you’ll have your entire professional history at your fingertips.

Don’t downplay your role at your work. You work hard right? You stay at your office the majority of your hours, so make sure your profile reflects all of the expertise you have.

Description Length & Job Responsibilities. Each job should have 2-3 paragraphs about what you do at it. Don’t write one sentence, that’s cheating yourself.

Volunteer! You probably care about something, which is great. Get involved and add that to your profile. You might even already volunteer something (Church counts)

Ask people for recommendations. This has been one of the largest positive things about my LinkedIn profile. I’ve actually made a habit of asking people for written recommendations over the years, and it’s worked out really well.

Only use great photos. Nothing less. I’ve done a few pieces on how to optimize this profile to reach the people you want to date. Over all, be yourself, and listen to the CEO of Tinder, he can also tell you how to make a great profile.

Don’t post photos of you with other romantic people. It’s just a precursor of how things in your new “non hook-up” relationship will be. No need to show everyone that someone used to like you. If you’re compelling enough, you don’t need it.

No photos with dogs or cars or guns. It’s just trying a bit too hard, and looks that way. Try asking your friend, or a sibling which photo looks best of you, use that one. And use a few good ones. And as an added bonus, leave the photos of you bungee jumping out.

Guys, no bathroom selfies. The type of girl you’re attracting with those types of photos is NOT who you want to date. You can either realize that now, or realize it later, but the truth remains.

Guys again, no photos with dogs. It’s trying a bit too hard. Google Search Guide
If you own the Google search results for your name, you’ve achieved your goal and completed crafted your personal brand for anyone (outside of the government) who searches for you.

You’ll need more than a few social media profiles though. Here are the other things you need to own all of the search results of the first page for your name.

Your own website. Learn how or pay someone to buy it and put something up. It can be a simple ‘getting to know you’ thing, or a consistent blog. Either way, get a website, it’s 2015.

Use your About.me page. This is another page that typically ranks pretty high if you optimize it. Don’t know what it is? It’s AOLs version of a personal website.

Twitter yourself into the first page. Use Twitter, because Google just started showing Twitter results in the search results pages. That’s another opportunity to craft your personal brand when someone searches for you online.

Wikipedia yourself. If you’ve done something of notoriety add yourself to Wikipedia. It’s a simple process because anyone can log on and add information. Just make sure it’s accurate or it will get removed.

The truth is they are just the start of your personal brand. Since the government knows all, crafting it will take consistent attention to your brand over the years. Doing this will reap tons of rewards though.

Any chance you get, make sure that you look at your digital footprint and think like your boss, partner or business opportunity would. Once you start thinking like your audience, (yes, you have one), you’ll start understanding how to build your brand.

I Save 20 Hours Per Week Using These Toolbar Plug Ins

Peter Shankman, founder of Help A Reporter Out, and a co-speaker at an event that I gave a lecture at this year told a story about his first productivity hack ever.

For medical reasons, he used to carry around a portable word processor when he was in grade-school. The idea was for this to be able to write down notes from the classroom since he had a some issues processing information without writing things down.

At first this was a source for a lot of pain, since the word processor was bulky (this was a few decades ago) and no one had ever seen anyone carrying around a big box to take notes in class with.

They could goof around and just study the notes before the test.

It saves you time from searching through folders, folling around with a design app just to annotate or redact something you don’t want to show. The additional cropping feature is my favorite, because you should always re-think your focus and sizes.

I know I know, it doesn’t seem like a time saver, but it is.

For those of you that are content power viewers, you’ve probably taken HDMI cables in a suitcase a time or two, or have wanted to watch something at home, and had to go through setting up a connected near by computer, right?

No more. This tool is great. There have been many times where it’s saved me. I’m a big believer in timing, and putting the right background noise or content on at the right time. This let’s you just that in matter of seconds.

Gone are the “Umm can you hang on a few minutes while I start this.” and say hello to immediate “Nexflix and chill” time.

Evernote Web Clipper Plugin

This tool easily saves me 3 hours a week.

 

If you’re not using Evernote in general, use it. This tool can clip things from the web and dump them into your Evernote so you can read later. It’s literally your “I need to save this but don’t know where to” tool. Everything is there for you to reference later.

I save receipts, booking info, photos, articles I want to read and more. If you keep Evernote up on your computer, the software will sync and stay up to date. That means on those long traveling sessions when you don’t have service, you’ll have lots of reading to catch up on.

This one saves time if you’re looking at web page stats like I do constantly. You’ll get everything you would previously need to visit over 8 websites to find, all in 1 click. What’s great is that it gives me the information I need to make decisions on this page, and if I stay on that page for whatever marketing purposes.

In a previous life, we all spent time drilling into a blog or website to try and find out how much reach they had socially and traffic wise. No more. For a marketer, this will save you at least 5 hours a week.

If you’re looking for authors to work with, and how influential they are, this is the tool for you. There’s an entire suite behind this tool too, but the Chrome extension is a great way to keep lots of data about an author at your fingertips.

If you’re into list apps, this is the best one in the business and because of that, you guessed it. They have a Chrome plug in. This one is great to quickly scan your list of things to do and keep things organized.

you can cross things off of you e list without ever opening the app on your computer, just keep things nice and neat of the tool becomes useless. Time saved – 4 hours per week.

This is really just the beginning of times saving with this tool as a whole. I highly recommend checking out the complete suite for lots of times saving ideas. One of the best blogs out there about time saving.

Hootsuite Chrome Plug In Suite

I’m calling this one a ‘suite’ because Hootsuite goes beyond the browser plug in. They’ve also got a mouse and web page tools suite that helps you save time. You’ll see these once you install the browser extension.

These tools specifically help people who are social media power users, and need to be tactical about posting, scheduling and collecting data from around the web to share. if you’re a marketer, this will easily save you 4-5 hours per week.

Moz Chrome Extension

This tool is one of the most classic time saving tools. For marketers, and webmasters of all kind, this will give you Moz ranking signals, and tell you if a site is performing, and in some cases, give you insight on if it’s a site you want to do marketing with.

The key here is to have a paid Moz account. The plug in will show a lot more rich data about the website if you have a paid account. You’ll get ranking factors and a lot more. When you’re looking at a Google search results page you’ll be able to see the stats about all the pages listed on the screen.

The last one on my list today is probably the most time saving plug ins of all. If you’re a marketer, you know that looking for partners to do a piece of content marketing with is long, hard work.

Buzzstream’s plugin helps you add authors you’d like to reach out to later right then while you’re on the page. There’s a bit of a learning curve to this, and if you’re looking for social signals, you’ll need to use BuzzSumo. Overall the tool is Great! Time saved 5 hours per week.

There you have it. I didn’t calculate, but that’s well over 20 hours of saving in a week.

If you’d like to waste a ton of time looking through apps that are supposed to save you time, that’s counter-productive, but you can look through all of the apps in the Chrome Store. In some cases, if you don’t apply the principles of time saving (discipline, good habits, etc.) you’ll waste tons of time.

How Linkedin Hacked Google And Grew Over 250%

Imagine a perfect world. Imagine all of the right things in all of the right places. No cell phone outages, no Kardashians, and employers that actually hire based on ability.

You sit at work for how many hours? 10? 12? And let me guess, you never ever go onto any social network from your desk, right?

I mean, that’s what our parents did when they were our age, they focused….for 10 hours straight…every day

What does this have to do with LinkedIn growth hacking Google?

LinkedIn’s founder Reid Hoffman realized the same idea in the early days during LinkedIn’s growth stage. We work differently today, with networking and communication about that work front and center.

When he saw that core behavior start changing, he knew if he aided the visual and digital manifestation of that, it would be big.

Here’s How The Hack Worked Against Google

Early on in LinkedIn days, Reid focused on getting 1 million users, this was his big goal. This caused the core team to focus on growth hacking, and trying to figure out how to scale visitors.

Right from the start, they knew that Google was the biggest traffic driver on the internet.

If they were going to get to 1 million users, they needed a way to get traffic from Google in a big way.

Since SEO controls the large majority of traffic for any niche, they knew that SEO would be where they focused their efforts.

What’s interesting, is that this strategy would take some very techincal solutions and ideas, and would never ever get a lot of press. The un-popular thinkers at the company would have to build the site’s pages in such a way, that the site quietly started getting lots of traffic.

So here’s what they did…

  1. They knew that each of their professional profiles would contain lots of great information that was previously only seen on a resume in the past.
  2. They wanted to offer a limited view of that information to the public and knew that Google would show this “fresh content” in the search results.
  3. They also knew, that nothing would compete in the search results like that since it’s was all new information that hadn’t been shared online yet.

The problem was, that one of the values of a social network was that the information on it is exclusive for members. so…

How do we share our information but not share out information?

Answer: Put Them Inside Of A Gated Paradise

In this ideology, you’ve got a cage so big and beautiful and luxurious that no one ever wants to wander out.

In LinkedIn’s terms, that mean sharing a version of the professional profiles with Google, available to non-members. This way Google can scan and display the information when people searched for a particular person that had a LinkedIn profile.

They call these Public Profiles

The hack that LinkedIn did, allowed a preview of every single professional profile to be searched by Google. So, when you search for anyone’s name, if they have a LinkedIn profile, they’ll show up.

The other day I was doing some consulting for a website seller who told me that “It’s just wasn’t like it used to be in Google search.”

He told me that his biggest problem was people leaving his shopping card, and almost 55% of his revenue had disappeared.

Keeping people in the cart and buying is the holy grail of ecommerce. Today we’re giving out the top tricks, secrets and hacks to keeping people in the cart.

These come from the most successful ecommerce shops in history, so apply these and you’ll optimize every visitor you get.

  1. The Long Game

Online, this means engaging in a conversation that’s worth having with them. If they’re leaving, they’re leaving, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be there when they’re ready to buy.

Once you create buyer personas, you’ll know how to convince the visitors to come back. You’ll know if they respond to discounts, promotions or social.

A combined 76% of customers use a credit or debit card of some form. If you don’t offer all of the options, you’re missing out. What’s worse is, you’ll never get their business.

Make sure to display them clearly.

WalMart.com is good exmaple. They chose to display all of the payment images in addition to a drop down box. Why?

Because they know people look for their payment method image first.

  1. Have The Right Click Depth

We call it click depth because people will only go so far down into a site. After that they tend to get bored and leave.

The goal is to get the purchase as close to 1 click as possible.

Build visual workflows of a user going through your shopping cart and find out where the unnecessary clicks are and eliminate them. This may take quite a bit of work, but you’ll save tons over the long run.

  1. Use The “Always On Top” Theory With Your Cart

It’s frustrating for users if they have to search for their shopping cart. You’ve got to find a way to always encourage them to buy, and items in a cart is the way to do it.

Make the cart a part of the native page at all times, even in mobile. Movies Unlimited did a test where they allowed visitors to see their cart from a drop down list. That move alone decreased their abandonment over 4%.

  1. You May Have Been Breaking Their Trust

Repeat business is critical, so the buyer experience has to be good. If a buyer doesn’t have a good experience, he’s probably not going to come back.

Customers know they have options, so it’s a race to see who can please them the most. Before we talk about trust, here are some hidden ways you can please your customers.

Talk about your why. If you show your customers what you stand for, you’ll attract like minded people who want to do business with you. This will develop into your core customer base.

Stroke Their Ego. Everyone loves it, and doing this sets the relationship off on the right foot. Use colors, images, the idea of themselves to convert them to loyal influencers.

Budget doesn’t matter. For most people, it’s all about the value, and for anyone who isn’t about value, you don’t want them as a customer. Create value.

 

Customers like businesses who know them. This is a lesson in data collection, email marketing, and content marketing.

Now, here’s the way you keep breaking their trust. Stop this now.

Don’t charge any hidden charges. This is really important if you want repeat business. This is an old marketing trick that doesn’t work any more. Be transparent about the end charge.

  1. Have A Great Shipping Strategy

There are different kinds. Test something that works for you, and the show it very clearly in all of your marketing imagery. Incorporate it into the language of your service staff, if you have them.

UPS.com is a great exmaple of knowing their value and promoting it. They’ve priced things so much that they know that $9.95 works in their sweet spot to attract new customers, even if they lose money on some of the shipments.

Three major shipping strategies:

Incremental Flat Fees. Charging 5% or 10% or 15% may make all the difference in the world to your profit. Test it for each section, and you might see significant jumps in purchases based on your market.

Threshold Strategy. Test a shipping threshold that’s just over your carts value and you may see the average checkout value go up. 3 months is a good testing time frame.

Delivery Time Strategy. If you’re operating in an industry that this is a big deal for, test different shipping times for the different time zones. Make sure you always show the time of shipment.

 

  1. Chase Customers Down The Street

Retargeting has gotten really useful over the last few years. Build optimized funnels for each check out path and item your customer visits.

Time the release of discounts. This means you’ll show them the exact item they wanted to buy, at a later time (days or weeks) at a discount.

This Bonobos.com ad does exactly that. Give me a 20% discount, and it’s intrusive.

Even more detailed, you time release ads, or only show them paired with specific site’s content as your user browses the web. This helps in using neuromarketing to influence them to buy.

My favorite retargeting platform is AdRoll.com With this platform you can target users in Facebook, all over the web, and only pick certain times & types of content to match ads with.
